Support Power BI Report Server multiple instances on a single server

Please add support for Power BI Report Server multiple instances on a single server. Like SQL Server Reporting Services : ability to change name, location, add, remove instance. On a mid/large report server farm, multiple instance helps a lot for progressive patching, ssrs subscription launch on different sql engine, etc.

Hi all, We aren’t planning to re-implement multi-instance support as we had prior to SSRS 2017. We recommend using virtualization as an alternative, and we’re also looking at possibly adding container support in the future. Thanks!

This is a must have. Due to all of our SAAS customers that we host, we've currently maxed out 2 servers with SSRS instances (the capacity is 50 instances on each one). Power BI has the same need!

I don't think the question raised by Riccardo Muti is right. Having multiple instances of PBI Report server could cater for different requirements for various projects and environments. For one of my clients, they have single box where they have both Dev & UAT instances of SQL Server which supports database, SSAS & SSRS, but not PBIRS. So, how do we give one single instance for the customers of various audience (Development, Testing, Production/end users, etc.,) Appreciate and please correct me if I am wrong.

The original Datazen portal allowed of the creation of multiple sites within the reporting server, I can think of the scenario of having UAT environment for the reports published and production one on the same server, on the same instance or different instance

Thanks Ricardo. That'll work - just means we need a bucket load of memory 🙂

Does this mean that SQL 2016 Enterprise will not support multiple SSRS instances moving forward? What if someone just wants multiple instances of PowerBI Server, and none of the other components of SQL Server 2016 Enterprise. Having to pay 30K+ USD per PowerBI Server instance, plus server costs, is not viable

Thanks Riccardo, I am with the multiple site approach (Similar to SharePoint and Datazen).

'@Ian, you can run multiple instances of Power BI Report Server on the same physical server today through virtualization at the OS/VM level, just not through a "multi-instance" feature built into Power BI Report Server. This shouldn't be a licensing issue, more of a manageability issue.

I think when the initial Power BI Report Server was introduced, it said its a superset of SSRS with some more. I would assume it would carry over every feature/support of SSRS. My company hosts ERP reports on a separate instance and in house developed reports on a separate instance. Moving to PBIRS, i think this would be needed.

One scenario could be different admins. We want to keep the admin access on certain data as small as possible (need to know based). One instance => one server would be a bit waste of resources.
