Connection timeout from PowerBI Gateway to Redshift

Hi,

I'm having an issue in refreshing PowerBI dashboard via PowerBI Gateway connecting to AWS Redshift. Problem is that sometime the refresh works but other time it does not work and returns a connection timeout issue. Any idea why this error happens.

Thanks

1 ACCEPTED SOLUTION

Look like something wrong with the network/firewall/VPN as the packages were dropped and hence connection was discrupted. When we moved the gateway into AWS, the problem was solved.

Hi @tongnghi

The connection timeout issue during Power BI dashboard refresh via Gateway and AWS Redshift is usually caused by:

  1. Network Instability: Ensure a reliable internet connection and check for firewall or VPN issues.
  2. Redshift Overload: Optimize the Redshift cluster, increase resources if needed, and manage workload using Workload Management (WLM).
  3. Gateway Settings: Keep the gateway updated and adjust timeout settings.
  4. Slow Queries: Optimize SQL queries, filter data at the source, and enable query folding.
  5. Large Data Volumes: Use incremental refresh or reduce data pull size.
  6. AWS Security Groups: Ensure the gateway's IP is allowed in the Redshift security group.
  7. Concurrent Queries: Avoid running too many queries at once; use Redshift concurrency scaling.
Check gateway logs, optimize queries, and schedule refresh during low activity periods.

Hi @tongnghi,
Thanks for reaching out in Microsoft Community Forum.

Below are the reasons to the connection timeout issue between Power BI Gateway and AWS Redshift during dashboard refresh:

1. Make sure the stable and low latency network between power BI gateway and Amazon Redshift

2. try to Increase timeout settings in the Power BI Gateway configuration to allow more time for Redshift queries to execute.

3. Please review the AWS CloudWatch logs for any connectivity issues during the refresh. Additionally, ensure that the Power BI Gateway, drivers, and Power BI Service are up-to-date. Note that Power BI refresh performance may be impacted during peak usage times.
